The Tassel Was Worth The Hassel

Happy Monday friends!
As some of you may know, I graduated from college last year and wow does it feel good to know that I’m done with school forever! (yes, this is me saying I don’t plan to EVER go back lol). I thought I’d come on here & not just give you all an update with what life after college has been like for me but to also hopefully encourage those who are still in school.

Let me start off by saying I hated school. I know hate is a strong word which is exactly why I’m using it. If I lived in a perfect world, I would have found a great and high paying job without having to suffer for years in school. But, now that I am done, I am SO glad and thankful I pushed to finish. I now have a dream job, I’m making really good money and I can actually say I LOVE my job. Now I know not everyone gets their dream job after college. Most don’t even find a decent job till months after. I can honestly say I got really really lucky. But, luck or not, I know It would have taken me a ridiculous amount of years to get the job and salary I’m at without a college degree. Although I don’t feel as if college fully prepared me for life after college nor do I think it taught me everything I needed to know, it DID teach me a lot and prepare me in ways I don’t think I could’ve prepared myself without help. If you are in school and feel like you’re suffering or if you hate it just as much as I did, my one piece of advice is to keep going. Just as Drake said #thankmelater no really, you will thank yourself when it’s all said and done. You will be so proud of yourself for accomplishing something not everyone gets to accomplish in their life. I think if you have the ability to go to school then you should take full advantage and go for it. No matter how many years it takes you. There are people out there who would kill to have the privilege to get an education. It’s something I had to remind myself of daily. Another thing that will help you keep going it asking yourself “why am I doing this?”. For me, I was doing this not just to provide and give myself a better life but I was also doing it for my parents and fiancé. Before meeting my fiancé, I wanted to make my parents proud by finishing school. My parents didn’t go to college but of course, did everything they could to help me get as far as I can with my education. The least I could do was graduate. I wanted to show them that everything they sacrificed for me was worth it. Then when I met my fiance and realized how important school was to him, I remember thinking to myself “there is no way I can give up now”. LOL, true story! Henry plays such a huge role in my life and is definitely the main reason I finished school. I could not have done it without his help, support & motivation. I could not fathom the thought of not being able to contribute in a way he was to our future life. How selfish of me to want this & that but not be willing to pay the price for it? With all that being said, after school, I was offered 3 jobs and after a long debate, I chose one that was too good to pass up and I now am working for the city I was born and raised in, a city I truly believe is one of the greatest where I have the opportunity to show others just how great the city of Houston is. Not only do I get to talk about it but I get to personally show others from all over the world too. I am also making the most I’ve ever made in my life and that is obviously a plus. What I’m trying to say is I could not have gotten this dream job without going to school and getting a degree. A college degree will take you to many places and open many doors for you. You just have to want it. College is more than just a way to get a high-paying job, it’s a way to enjoy life and become the person you were meant to be. School is not for everyone, like myself. Some people love it & some people hate it but finishing school is something you will NEVER regret in life. Only wondering what life could be like without a degree is something to regret.

Are you currently in school? If so, how’s it going for you? Did you graduate already? If so, I’d love to hear how life has been for you after college? Either way, whether you’ve finished or not, I pray you find the strength to keep going. YOU WILL FINISH! & when you do, you WILL thank yourself.

I loved your post! I actually really enjoyed school I feel like it connected me with likeminded individuals and it’s what motivated me to keep pursuing my career. I do agree with you, that it didn’t fully prepared me to what my career really was so after I graduated I was quickly let down and to be honest very discouraged that maybe I had chosen the wrong career path. After weeks of feeling let down and insufficient I decided to take the skills and network that I had acquired and decided to create my own career path in education but in the corporate world. To be honest I still have a long way to go but finishing school was an accomplishment I feel really proud off, I started something and was able to finish it.

Thanks so much! & you go, girl! Way to take all you had and make something out of it rather than just giving up. This is just the beginning and I am SURE you will get to where you want to be. So excited for you!
